Suilven needs little introduction. Despite not even making it to Corbett height, it's still one of the most dramatic and instantly recognisable mountains in the country. A narrow ridge rises abruptly from a rough gneiss foreland which has so many lochans that at times it seems more water than land. Any direct ascent from the west requires rock climbing, and from the east some exposed scrambling and a good head for heights. Only in the centre of the ridge, at the Bealach Mor, can it be reached without difficulty, although the final part of the routes up to the ridge from both north and south is becoming badly eroded.

On this spring day recent heavy rains and melting snow had turned the approach from Inverkirkaig into a five mile morass, and it was a great relief to reach the steeper slopes. The picture was taken from below the summit, Caisteal Liath, looking east along the ridge to Meall Mheadhonach. Canisp is to the left beyond Loch na Gainimh.
