Beinn Dearg has recently been re-surveyed and its height determined as being 913.675m, or 2,997ft 7in, some 0.7 metres below Munro height . Well, it may be short of Munro status in an area of magnificent mountains, but it still manages to hold its own and is in no way intimidated. The good news is that it's likely to remain refreshingly quiet and not suffer the queues which form on the other Torridon hills in the summer. In three visits to Beinn Dearg I have only met one other person on the ridge. However, this is a great hill and is thoroughly recommended; the ridge is interesting and the views superb. I had gone up the previous evening, climbing one of the gullies on the south face above Coire Mhic Nobuil, and bivvied about a kilometre east of the summit. I was up before sunrise, heading over the narrowest part of the ridge, from where the picture was taken, before heading up to the summit. From here a nice ridge heads north west to Stuc Loch na Cabhaig; this is followed by a steep descent to the Bealach a'Chomhla and an easy walk back down to the road. |
