The north ridge of Ben Starav is a prominent feature of the hill when seen from Glen Etive to the north. The ridge is straightforward but interesting, and scores a bulls-eye by arriving unerringly right at the summit cairn. Virtually the entire route can be seen from the Coileitir track at the base of the hill where the River Etive is crossed.

On this beautiful day in early autumn I left the car late in the morning and went up the north ridge, then out along the south ridge as far as Stob an Duine Ruaidh before returning to the summit to wait for the evening light. It was warm, sunny and still and I even managed to drop off to sleep on the summit for a while before stirring myself as the sun dropped. The picture was taken only a few metres from the cairn. I just had time to reach the foot of the ridge again and cross the river before it became too dark to walk without a torch.
